Iberia.com – The Best Airline Website

Iberia.com 2 amadeus logo

First of all, let’s make it clear: there are many-many different awards in the airline industry, given by different magazines, industry players and other organizations, so each year almost every airline could be holding the “Airline of the Year” award and it would be totally legally fair. So you should always read the notice at the bottom of the page in small letters about the giving organization/magazine, category, etc. (“CSA: the best Airline” – *by the World Airline Awards, in the Central-European Airline Category, “Malév: the best Airline” – *as voted by the readers of the travel magazine Global Traveler, in the Eastern/Central European Airline Category, etc., etc.)

So you should always look and read twice before you base your next flight decision purely on such an award. But it’s much easier and carries much less risk to look at different airline websites and see for yourself which one you like the most.

The Interactive Media Council Inc. (a non-profit organization of leading web designers, developers, programmers, advertisers and other web-related professionals) has established The Interactive Media Awards to recognize the highest standards of excellence in website design and development. The judges provided by the Council judged across five key criteria: Design, Content, Usability, Feature functionality and Cross Browser compatibility. Iberia.com scored 482 out of 500 possible. This means 96.4%, which is a very good result in itself. We don’t know how much the other participants have scored, but this is very impressive. This score entitled Iberia to take home the award in the Travel Airline Category. And as we should judge a website based on its main profile, it sounds fair that it was competing with other airline websites from all around the world and came out as winner! (and it’s not such a category as “best airline website in South-Western part of Europe that uses both the red and the yellow colors”…)

In case of an airline website you always have to mention the service provider, as the IT solution behind such a front-end is very complicated and the performance of a website (especially the booking engine, but other informational parts as well, such as schedule) is highly dependant on the service provider behind it! Iberia (as many other leading airlines and basically all airlines in the oneworld alliance of which Iberia is a member of) has teamed up and cooperated with Amadeus. Actually the Amadeus e-Travel Airline Suite – aka Planitgo (for internet solutions) is used by over 70 of the world’s leading airlines to power over 250 websites in more than 80 markets. So chances are good that you have already booked an airline ticket over the internet, using an Amadeus solution.

After a quick look at iberia.com I have found that you can only choose those countries, where Iberia operates a flight, but they do not offer an “International” or “Europe” version of their website, which is a common solution around the industry. Otherwise we have found it nice and easy to use at first glance. However, please note that we plan to conduct a review of some of the biggest airlines’ websites, so please add our blog to your RSS reader, to be among the first ones to read it!

Yep, it will be much fun to analyze them. Especially because we did itonce, when we created the present Malev website and most of these websites have not been renewed since then.

I have been trying to book a flight from Nice to Madrid in May 2008. Your website makes it impossible to mmake a booking from any place other than UK or Spain. A very poor website.

  4. 4 balint01 January 7, 2008 at 4:23 am

    Dear “n sibley”!

Thanks for your comment about the non-perfectly functioning Iberia.com website, but please note that it’s not “our website”, and in our blog we have written this article based on the news that one organization have chosen this website to be the best among airline websites. It was not our own personal decision, we have commented on a news item basically. But your comment obviously proves that it still has problems.
Having worked with an Airline booking engine before, if certain flights can not be booked on a website it may be due to several reasons, which may be outside of the booking engine itself, for example: scheduling has made a mistake while filing the schedule for the Nice-Madrid route, or pricing was filed with an error, or simply the office of the booking engine was not given the right to sell Nice-Madrid tickets (most probably also by a human mistake), etc. It can be many-many different reasons. But it doesn’t really make a difference as long as if a passenger like you can not book a flight they will blame the website and the booking engine, as it is not their business to know what may cause the error.
If you have any other experience with iberia.com or other airline websites, please feel free to share those with us as well!
    Thanks!

I wish to book Iberia economy from Jhb to Dublin in May 2009
but this site assumes I want to start in UK. How do I get around this problem please?

  6. 6 balint01 June 11, 2008 at 10:33 am

Hi Brian, you can change the country (and the language) on the top left hand side:
HOME UNITED KINGDOM ( Iberia in / en)
You need to click on the part “Iberia in” and a small drop-down menu would open up where you can change the country as you wish.
    I hope it helps.

I have a round trip flight from Miami-Madrid-Roma flight #6122/3612 scheduled for Oct 11,2008 and for Roma-Madrid-Miami flight#3609/6123 scheduled for Oct 26,2008. The tickets were purchased at the Iberia counter at the Miami Int’l airport on my credit card. The Electronic Ticket # is 075 ********** and the Locator No.is ******.

I only have a simple paper showing the flt numbers/time of departures & arrivals. Nothing showing amount paid nor a normal itinerary including an indication of confirmation of said flights, payment and other pertinent information commonly shown by all other airlines.

I have been unable to make internet contact with Iberia.com home or other locations to request the above information. This is not my first flight on Iberia and it’s the first time of such minimal printed information.

Help on this would be appreciated. Ana M Beckett

    Hi Ann,

I’m sorry to hear that you were not able to reach Iberia customer center, and I hope you forgive me for removing your locator # and eT # from your comment before posting it above here – for privacy reasons.

I can give you a website address, though:

    http://www.checkmytrip.com

If you type in your reservation number and your last name, you will get the details of the booking and it looks like all flights are confirmed – which means you guys all have a valid, issued e-Ticket for October. You can print your itinerary from this site as well.

Just a personal note: when you get to Madrid, hurry up as you will have a limited amount of time to pass through Immigration and take the small train to the main terminal area. Just be prepared for that and try to rush as much as possible – so that you can reach your connection.

    Cheers,
    balint01

    Dear Sirs:
I am writing this message in praise of your employee Antonio (Tony) Barbera. My wife and I were to take our two granddaughters to Spain on 9 June 2008. Unfortunately, my passport was expired. I arrived at the Iberia Airlines counter in Chicago with an expired passport – hoping to get a new one at the Chicago US Passport Agency, but not knowing how to do it.
Your employee, Tony Barbera was of the utmost help to me. He knew just what needed to be done and helped me do it. With Tony’s help, I got my new passport and was on my Iberia Airlines flight the next day!
    Thanks Tony,
    Steven Schonefeld

    To whom it concerns.

Would somebody from Iberia please contact me at my email address.

I was among the passengers who were delayed traveling from madrid to Brasil. My original reservation was for flight IB3161 ticket 075-2333046631. Date tues 16th Dec, 08.

You will see from your records that I did not arrive in Rio Janeiro til two days later after 3 more cancelled flights.

I am aware that some of my fellow passengers have received full refund of the fare and that there is a form that needs to be filled in order to apply for compensation. I have also aquainted myself with your information on customer rights and feel sure that I have a right to be compensated. I was among the few who were delayed for the longest time, starting at heathrow.

Please help me to get through whatever procedure is necessary. I wil be in Brasil at different adresses for the next 6 weeks, so if you would provide me with an contact number and let me have the form and whatever info is necessary I would be grateful.

    Thank you,

    A. Spillane

    Dear A.Spillane,

We are a private blog, writing about airlines related issues, thus we can not help you with your claim against Iberia, the only thing we can provide you with is Iberia’s current contact information from their website:

The Iberia Rio de Janeiro office:
Avda. Presidente Antonio Carlos 51, 9º piso. (Rio de Janeiro) – Cep 20020-010
    Teléfono: (5521)22821336

    General Brasil phone number:
    Sao Paulo(55) 1132187130

And we hope you succeed with your claim as your story doesn’t sound too good with 4 cancelled flights before getting to your destination…

Best regards and good luck with the claim, and also better luck for flights in 2009,

    balint01

    Subject: IB6051 Delay

    To whom it may concern,

My family was scheduled to fly back on Iberian airlines, IB6051 on 5 January 2009 00:30. Due to unforeseen circumstances our plane was delayed by more than eight hours.
I find this to be unacceptable service. My husband and I both run our own business’s and were scheduled to attend to our duties on the 5 January, upon our arrival. Due to this significant delay, both our business’s suffered a financial loss and our reputations were put at risk.
We appreciate that we were put up in a hotel for the night, but due to the loss suffered, I do not feel that this alone was an adequate reimbursement and would like to request further compensation.

    Kind regards,

    Hi
    It was a year ago.
I was delayed by another airline (Etihad) and therefore missing my connection flight from Casablanca to Barcelona. So I brought a Iberia ticket for myself and my wife at the Iberia city office at Casablanca. I was told I have to pay cash and the credit card service was down. I was in such a rush that I did and forgot to ask for a receipt. Days later I return to the same city office to ask for a receipt so I could make a claim to Etihad. The people at the Iberia office issued a receipt of a value much lower (only at 2/3) of what I paid. I questioned why there was such a huge discrepancy. I was told the staff handling the tickets were on holiday. I was given the address of the manager (Centro Relacion Clientes C.A.C. at Madrid) and was told to complain to the manger. Since then I have written and sent my document to the manager 4 times. I have written email to the person in charge at Casablanca (Mr Sif Mohamed) but I have not received any reply.
Please help me clarify the situation. I can send the document to you again.
It has been rather frustrating and I sense there seems to be some covering up of some sort.
    Many thanks.
    Regards.simon

    Hi Simon,
I’m sorry about your bad experience with Iberia, but as we have replied to previous comments above, I can only repeat myself: we are a private airline blog, we are not in any way affiliated with Iberia Airlines, thus I can’t help you with your case at all.
You should turn to your country specific Iberia office with such claims, they may be able to help you.
You can find their office contacts on their website:

Dear all, i booked a flight from Madrid-Oviedo_ MAdrid. Having in view the delay of the IBeria from OViedo to Madrid with aprox 50 min made me loose the connection i had with Tarom airlines to Bucharest. I went to Customer service in Madrid terminal 4 and i was amazed to see that the employers were pretending not to speak English. Even if i explain them the situation the only thing that they do was to charge me for a new ticket with 372 euros… Between the connection from Oviedo to Madrid and Madrid Bucharest i had 1 hours and 20 min…enough time to check in and board the plain…I don’t think that this thing should be happening… If in this case is any solution i will be glad to hear from you.

  19. 20 balint01 January 7, 2010 at 3:03 pm

    Mihaela,
Thanks for your comment. We can only emphasize once again, that we are a private blog, writing about airline related stories and news, but we are NOT the Iberia website, nor are we connected to Iberia in any other way.
With your claim, you should turn to the Iberia Airlines, at their official website, or contact one of their offices:
http://www.iberia.com/ and look for the “Contacts” link at the top right hand corner
    Cheers,

    Hi Solomon,

You can check it yourself for example here on the Delta Airlines site:
    http://www.delta.com/planning_reservations/plan_flight/international_travel_information/visa_passport_information/index.jsp

    This information is airline independent.

But I checked it for you and this is the link where the above site would give you your customized specific information:
    http://www.timaticweb.com/cgi-bin/tim_website_client.cgi?SpecData=1&VISA=&page=visa&NA=NG&AR=00&PASSTYPES=PASS&DE=EC&TR=ES&user=DL&subuser=DELTAB2C

HOW CAN ANYONE SUPPORT IBERIA AIRLINES WHEN THEIR WEB SITE DOES NOT WORK IN CONJUNCTION WITH THEIR OFFICES!!
I RECEIVED A CONFIRMATION OF A RESERVATION FOR A RETURN FLIGHT FROM JOHANNESBURG TO ALICANTE WHICH WAS BOOKED ON IBERIA’S WEBSITE.
THIS BOOKING WAS SUBJECT TO PAYMENT WITHIN 72HOURS.
I EVEN RECEIVED THEIR OFFICIAL CONFIRMATION OF RECEIPT OF THE PAYMENT DETAILS, EX MY CREDIT CARD, WITHIN THE PRESCRIBED TIME PERIOD.
HOWEVER,NO NITIFICATION WAS GIVEN TO THE EFFECT THAT BOOKIMNGS AND PAYMENTS COULD ONLY BE FINALISED MANUALLY BY THE LOCAL IBERIA OFFICE.
THIS MEANT THAT OWING TO THE OFFICES NOT BEING OPERATIONAL OVER THE WEEKEND MY BOOKING WAS AUTOMATICALLY CANCELLED BY THE COMPUTOR WITH NO NOTIFICATION OR RECOURSE.
TO CONTACT THE LOCAL OFFICE IS VIRTUALLY IMPOSSIBLE, TO THE EXTENT THAT INVARIABLY, IF AND WHEN THE CALL IS PICKED UP, THE OFFICE IN SPAIN ANSWERS.
MY TRIP WAS PURELY FOR BUSINESS, AND THEREFORE INVOLVED FIXED APPOINTMENTS,ALL OF WHICH, HAD TO BE CANCELLED.
    NEVER AGAIN !!
